Canada reached its goal of 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021. The goal for at least the next 2 years is to welcome even more. This number surpasses the previous record in 1913.
To achieve this goal, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada used new technology and brought in more resources. Programs embraced essential workers, health care workers, and international graduates. Temporary workers already in Canada became permanent residents. Families were brought together.
Canada needs immigrants as the population ages and for economic growth, especially during and after the pandemic. Immigration creates jobs, helps with labour shortages, and enriches communities in Canada.
