Ontario is the most populated province in all of Canada and accounts for about 38% of Canada’s total population. Ontario is home to the country’s capital – Ottawa, as well as the country’s most populated city – Toronto. The total population of Ontario is about 14.3 million people spread out over its just over 1 million square kilometres. Ontario is mainly an English-speaking province; however, about 5% of the population consider themselves Franco-Ontarian.
Toronto, the capital of Ontario and the largest city in all of Canada, is home to over 7 million Canadians. Toronto is a centre for all kinds of sectors, from business and finance to arts and culture, and is recognized as one of the most multicultural cities in the world. The Toronto Stock Exchange, as well as the headquarters for five of the largest banks in Canada, are located in Toronto. The economy in Toronto is highly diverse with strengths in technology, design, financial services, education, fashion, food and environment. Tourism is a huge part of the economy in Toronto thanks to the CN Tower, Casa Loma, the Toronto Maple Leafs NHL team and the Blue Jays MLB team.
Ottawa is another prominent city in Ontario and is the capital city of Canada. The population of Ottawa is just under 1 million residents and is known for being one of the most educated cities in the country. Ottawa has a high standard of living, a very low rate of unemployment, and it has the fourth highest GDP rate among major Canadian cities. The primary economy in Ottawa is Public Service due in part that the Canadian Government is run in the Parliament Buildings located downtown Ottawa. In addition, the technology economy in Ottawa has taken off, with about 1800 different companies employing roughly 63,400 people.
Ontario is home to many different economic sectors including tech, business, farming and tourism. The tourism economy in Ontario is high during the summer due to Ontario’s vast outdoor recreation activities that are relatively close to large urban areas. In the winter the tourism tapers off, however in the winter tourism attracts for different reasons, for hunting, skiing and snowmobiling are very popular.
Because Ontario is typically divided into Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario, the average home prices vary depending on which region you are in. In Northern Ontario, housing prices average around $226,000. In Southern Ontario, housing prices average about $495,000. Northern Ontario also has a slightly harsher climate resulting in longer winters than Southern Ontario. Northern Ontario also has more forestry than Southern Ontario as there are less urban areas in the North part of the province.
